The Snake Music draws upon: the blues, film music, Indian music, Hawaiian music… If the album has a subtext, a “message”, it is that the old genre-definitions won’t hold any longer. Musicologically alert, Miroslav Tadic and Mark Nauseef know how to find the interstices, the fissures and the cracks, between the cultures and idioms they explore. This music is not about “fusion” in the crass and accepted sense: it has more to do with finding the musical-historical channels and passageways that link the idioms – passages just wide enough for snakes to negotiate.
